Some not very good photographs of Pop’s writing-box:
I believe that the outer casing is made of walnut. The magenta ribbon I glued across the joins in the writing surface to cover surgical tape that Pop had used to fix it years ago. The inner compartment lids were made without hinges, so that they were only held on by the lining material, which eventually split at the join. The only way to reattach them, short of getting someone to replace the lining, was with something strong but highly flexible. Pop’s tape was still doing its job well, so I found some satin ribbon and made a feature of a fix-up. There were a few other gashes in the black material, which I cosmetically touched up with black nail varnish. The gold ribbon pull-tabs are replacements as the old ones had come off. Dad and I also repaired a slide-lock which holds an inner compartment lid in place when you open the box, but it was too difficult to show.
